Scrippas on the rise: Derrick Collins II
HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 3, 2020) - Derrick Collins II, a 2020 Journalism graduate of Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, is employed through the Chicago Urban League and is stationed at NR Media Agency LLC, a media and marketing agency in the city.
What I am doing: I oversee story drafts, flyers, formulating beats and corresponding with our manager.
How Scripps helped me get here: Scripps, specifically Professor Lynn Waltz and Assistant Dean Edward "Butch" Maier, helped me to get straight to the point when editing written material. I used to be very timid when giving and/or receiving critiques about stories... Working in the real world of journalism, and under strict time constraints, has pushed me to 'tell it like it is' when something is wrong...That has allowed me to grow my editorial eye and cultivate the skills taught at Scripps.
