Essence Magazine Co-Founder Comes to Hampton University

Essence Magazine's Ed Lewis will visit the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the school's television studio. Lewis will be the highlight of the School's television show "The Caldwell Café," hosted by Prof. Earl Caldwell. Students, faculty and the community are welcome to attend the production. Lewis will be promoting his new book, "The Man from Essence: Creating a Magazine for Black Women." He will hold a book signing immediately following the show.

Lewis will talk about the myriad of challenges he and his three co-founders experienced over the years. He will explain the major obstacles in managing the magazine, especially the experiences of four men operating a lifestyle and fashion magazine for women, as well as the racial challenges and personality clashes among the owners. Lewis will also share the public turmoil but eventual triumph over the selling of the magazine to Time, Inc.

Prof. Earl Caldwell is a nationally renowned journalist who was the central figure in one of the most celebrated cases in American history involving reporters' rights. At Hampton University, Prof. Caldwell is writer-in-residence at the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications and host of the Caldwell Café television series.
