Hampton University Professor Butch Maier's Comedy Opens as No. 2 Movie in the U.S.

Norfolk, Va. (May 6, 2019) – “Mother of a Day,” Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications Professor Butch Maier's comedy about an African American family, earned the second-highest gross per theater of any movie in the U.S. on May 4, according to Box Office Mojo and the-numbers.com.

“As Dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, I think I speak for the entire student, faculty and staff when I say having Butch Maier join our team has ushered in a wave of good things. A renewed interest in Business Journalism because he is a former editor form Inside Business; scholarships out of the philanthropic arm of a foundation that listened to his call for support, and now, the fruit of his passion, which is film making, has placed our brand in the headlines. We are absolutely thrilled for this deserving, creative journalist/film maker and all around good person,” said B. DaVida Plummer, Dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications.

“Mother of a Day,” about a man who forgets Mother's Day, opened in one theater and grossed $2,672 for its premiere at Naro Expanded Cinema in Norfolk, Virginia.

Lamont Ferguson, Shanadiah Nicole, Malachi DeWitt, Karen M. Bryson and Ron Bianchi star in writer-director Butch Maier’s “Mother of a Day,” produced and distributed by Maier’s Sumbadhat Productions.

“Avengers: EndGame” averaged $13,176 per theater during its ninth day.

“The Intruder,” in the middle of its first weekend, recorded the third-highest average at $1,895.

“Mother of a Day,” a family-friendly story shot in seven days, totaled more in one theater than the Matthew McConaughey vehicle “The Beach Bum” did – $2,240 – in 14 theaters combined.

“Mother of a Day” expands May 6th to East Park Cinema in Clinton, North Carolina, and May 8 to Beach Cinema AleHouse in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
