Scripps Senior to Intern at Washington Post
Dec. 8, 2009
Shannon Epps, a senior print journalism major from Smithfield, Va., has been awarded an internship for summer 2010 with The Washington Post, working on its universal news desk.
Epps will edit for both the online and print operations of the Post, the nation’s fifth-largest newspaper by circulation. Her duties will combine traditional copy editing with online functions such as publishing online articles and blog posts, updating Web pages and section fronts, and working on multimedia projects.
“I’m excited about the internship and honored to have been chosen,” Epps said. “The Post is one of the best newspapers in the country, and I hope to represent Scripps well as I expand my skills and gain experience this summer.”
Epps’ 12-week internship begins June 7, about a month after she is expected to graduate from the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University.
Epps has already achieved a rare double with internships. Sponsored by the prestigious Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, she spent summer 2008 as a business reporting intern for the Naples, Fla., Daily News and summer 2009 as a copy-editing intern for the St. Petersburg, Fla., Times.
She has also been a copy editor and copy desk chief for the Hampton student newspaper, The Script.
