Scripps Howard Senior Wins Top National Honor
Shannon Epps, a senior journalism major in the Scripps Howard
School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University,
has been awarded the top scholarship for copy editing among
all the nation’s college students.
The American Copy Editors Society selected Epps as the winner of its Merv
Aubespin Scholarship, named for a former Louisville Courier-Journal editor
who is considered the “godfather” of ACES.
As the Aubespin scholar, Epps receives $2,500. She will be presented her
award in April 2010 at the annual ACES national conference in Philadelphia.
She also receives free registration to the conference and $400 for travel
Epps will be a paid intern on the multimedia desk of the Washington Post
in summer 2010 under the aegis of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Chips
Quinn Scholars Program.
It will be Epps’ third DJNF internship, which is a record in the
51-year history of the program. She was a copy-editing intern at the St.
Petersburg Times in 2009 and a business reporting intern at the Naples (Fla.) Daily
News in 2008.
