Scripps Howard Senior Wins Top National Honor

Shannon Epps, a senior journalism major in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, has been awarded the top scholarship for copy editing among all the nation’s college students.

The American Copy Editors Society selected Epps as the winner of its Merv Aubespin Scholarship, named for a former Louisville Courier-Journal editor who is considered the “godfather” of ACES.

As the Aubespin scholar, Epps receives $2,500. She will be presented her award in April 2010 at the annual ACES national conference in Philadelphia. She also receives free registration to the conference and $400 for travel expenses.

Epps will be a paid intern on the multimedia desk of the Washington Post in summer 2010 under the aegis of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Chips Quinn Scholars Program.

It will be Epps’ third DJNF internship, which is a record in the 51-year history of the program. She was a copy-editing intern at the St. Petersburg Times in 2009 and a business reporting intern at the Naples (Fla.) Daily News in 2008.
