Isabel Wilkerson - Founder's Day Speaker

By Jillian Carter, Ebony Willis and Rayahna Harris

On Sunday, Jan. 27, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of the New York Times’ Bestseller, The Warmth of Other Suns, Isabel Wilkerson will be the guest speaker at the 120th Annual Founder’s Day Ceremony.

Fifteen long, hard, and dedicated years of research and more than 1,000 interviews later, Wilkerson's work was finally completed. The book illustrates the great U.S. migration of blacks from the South to the Midwest, Northeast and Pacific West regions. It focuses on the epic journey of three young people and their determination to make it out of the South. Just like the three characters described in her book, Wilkerson has her own story to success. Graduating with the B.A. in journalism from Howard University, she then interned at the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. Sought out by many, she has lectured at Harvard University, taught at Emory and Princeton Universities and is currently the Professor of Journalism and the Director of Narrative Nonfiction at Boston University.

In Hampton’s mission statement it says that the University is “dedicated to the promotion of learning, building of character and preparations of promising students for positions of leadership and service.” With all of her accomplishments, many would say that Isabel Wilkerson is the perfect candidate to guest speak at the 2013 Founder's Day Ceremony.
