Prof. Allie-Ryan Butler

Prof. Allie-Ryan Butler is the most recent addition to the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications faculty. He currently teaches Media in Multicultural Society, Media Law, Media Criticism, and Principles of Advertising.  A native of Columbus, Ohio, Prof. Butler lived in New York and Washington, D.C. before finally finding a home in Virginia. After completing his undergraduate degree at Howard University, he went on to receive his master’s degree at New York University.

Prof. Butler has previously worked in business affairs with the well-known record label, Atlantic Records. Following his work with Atlantic Records, Prof. Butler worked for two years as a media consultant for MTV Networks, where he worked with MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central. There he contributed to the work of such hit shows as the "Chappelle’s Show," "The Colbert Report," "The Sarah Silverman Program" and "The Daily Show" with John Stewart.  Although he has gained much experience working with top-notch companies, his greatest accomplishment thus far has been the realization that his genius was teaching in the classroom. He said, “Although it may look like it’s a step back, for me it was stepping into who I really am." Prof. Butler’s specialty resides with proposal writing as well as creative writing.
