Students in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications receive a hands-on approach to their education. Faculty members bring extensive professional experience to the classroom, and they challenge students to produce work that will effectively prepare them for careers as journalists and media professionals. Students also get the opportunity to gain experience outside of the classroom. Many of our print journalism majors work for the Hampton Script, the campus newspaper. Broadcast journalism majors work on TV news programs and produce newscasts for WHOV-FM, the school's radio station. Public relations and advertising students create full-fledged campaigns for real clients. Media management majors learn various business aspects of the media from television station and newspaper managers who visit the school regularly. In addition, all of the school's majors are required to complete an internship at a media organization before they graduate.

But the Scripps Howard School is about more than learning skills and getting a degree. Students are asked to think critically and to consider the effect of the work that journalists and communications professionals do. The Scripps Howard Foundation invested in the school at Hampton because it believes the U.S. media need to do a better job of representing the interests of an increasingly diverse society. We hope that the alumni of the Scripps Howard School will make a difference as they enter their careers in the nation's newsrooms and media outlets.
